ITI-112 The Linux Operating System
4 Credit hours - 2 Lecture, 2 Lab
Prerequisite(s): Grade of “C” or better in ITI 107 and ITI 108.
Course Rationale:
This course provides students the opportunity to gain basic knowledge and skills necessary to plan, install and configure basic Linux installations in desktop and network roles. Students will learn about the theories of implementation and design behind, and historical background of, Unix and Linux. By the end of the course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot Linux installations as well as having the knowledge necessary to potentially pass the CompTIA Linux+ certification exam.
Catalog Description:
This course targets the Linux operating system. Students will install the Linux operating system and configure a basic Linux network including a server and workstation. At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to configure user and group accounts and use network resources including applications and printing.
Course Objectives
Install a popular Linux version on a desktop computer and configure for usability, network connectivity, and access to networked resources.
Discuss the origin and development of the Unix and Linux operating systems, and explain the distinction between Unix and Linux.
Describe the distinction between hosts, real and virtual terminals, and terminal servers, and outline the relationship between these entities.
Explain how to locate information in the help system, and how to read a help file.
Develop proficiency in using the Linux graphical user interface.
Develop proficiency with the Linux command line interface, to include optimal skills in keyboard usage.
Exhibit skill in writing simple and detailed shell scripts, including the use of variables, control structures, redirection, sorting and pattern recognition programs, and other useful techniques.
Display competence in using text editors to write and manipulate code and output.
Demonstrate verbal and written competency through a research paper and a corresponding in-class presentation.
