CIS Capstone Competition or Service Participation Requirement
Integrated Service-Learning (ISL) that incorporates a community service experience with classroom instruction has been integrated into this course to provide a community-based learning experience. Service-Learning addresses the practice of citizenship and promotes an awareness of and participation in public affairs. Students in a degree program requiring CIS260 - Software Engineering Project must complete this requirement.
You can fulfill this requirement by completing ONE of the following:
Community Service
The Integrated Service-Learning requires a minimum of 15 hours of unpaid service to a not-for-profit community organization, government agency or public service provider. The community partner for this course is the agency identified and chosen from the Community Focus Report for Springfield and Greene County, and/or others as approved by the course instructor.
The community service placement will relate to the course learning objectives as outlined in this syllabus. Reflection assignments are assigned to help students understand discipline concepts and develop higher-order critical thinking skills. Additionally, this course provides students with real-world experience that can be included on resumes, offers the ability to test career choices, to apply theories and concepts learned in class and make connections to the real world, and the opportunity to have a positive impact in our community.
Providing your time in service to the college and our department does meet this requirement.
Approved Technical Competition
The student would participate in an approved technical competition (i.e. a web design contest, coding competition, SkillsUSA)
Presentation or Demonstration at Professional Event
The student will create a presentation and/or demonstration for a technically-based professional event. This can be a User Group, Conference, or other professional gatherings. The student does not have to present alone but they must have at least 50% of the speaking and/or demonstration component.
All activities must be approved by the instructor prior to your participation for appropriate credit to be granted.
Your instructor will attempt to provide you with information about possible competitions or service opportunities, however, it is your responsibility to research and fulfill this requirement.
