CYB-114 Introduction to Networking

Course Rationale:

This course provides students with an overview of the technologies and principles of data communication to prepare students for more advanced networking concepts. It is imperative for students interested in a cybersecurity career to understand the fundamentals of enterprise networks and systems. This course prepares students to take the CompTIA Network+ certification exam, which is an element in the CompTIA cybersecurity pathway.

Catalog Description:

Introduction to Networking covers the essentials of hardware, software, and other elements that comprise today’s data networking environments. Topics covered include network hardware, topologies, transmission media, operating systems, systems administration, security, and IT standards. Lab activities include basic diagnostic software use, network troubleshooting, and solo and team activities designed to build interpersonal communication skills. This course helps prepare students to pass the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.

  1. Install and configure client and server systems for network connectivity.

  2. Describe basic features of network hardware.

  3. Explain network topologies and technologies by type and usage.

  4. Identify network media and governing protocols.

  5. Compare network reference models and standards.

  6. Outline basic features of network operating systems.

  7. Evaluate and employ network administration, security, and support roles.

  8. Troubleshoot network problems via industry-standard theory and techniques.

  9. Develop and demonstrate written and verbal communication skills through in-class writing assignments and corresponding presentations in a team setting.
