Course Rationale:

Security and risk management skills are among the most highly sought after skills in networking, and global demand continues to grow. Organizations around the world are experiencing a shortage of qualified candidates with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to administer policies, devices and applications in a secure infrastructure, recognize network vulnerabilities, and mitigate security threats.

Catalog Description:

Information Technology Security is a hands on course with an emphasis on practical experience and core cybersecurity knowledge to help students develop skills and advance their careers. The curriculum in this course is a springboard to intermediate-level cybersecurity career opportunities and is aligned with the CompTIA Security+ certification.

Course Objectives

1. Demonstrate an overall knowledge of network security principles.

2. Identify types of attacks against networks and the entities who may perpetrate such attacks.

3. Describe best practices for security implementation in physical and logical realms.

4. Identify and implement security baselines for monitoring network health and security.

5. Describe basic cryptographic methods by type and related advantages and disadvantages.

6. Design, document, and implement physical security and disaster recovery plans.

7. Install and use open-source and proprietary intrusion detection and network security applications.

8. Deploy and maintain symmetric and asymmetric encryption tools, including key and certificate management.

9. Define the need for and draft organizational security policies.

10. Explain best practices in security policy enforcement.

11. Cultivate research skills in the security arena to address current and future security needs and best practices.

12. Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills.
