CIS100 - Basic Computer Literacy

3 Credit hours - 2 Lecture, 2 Lab

Course Rationale:

This course is intended for students with little or no prior experience with computers. Some students come to college without having been exposed to computers or whose computer skills predate current programs like Microsoft Office and the creation of the World Wide Web. For students like these, an introductory computer course provides a digital literacy foundation and increases their confidence with computers.

Catalog Description:

This is a hands-on course designed for the beginner or new user who wants to learn the essentials of how to use a personal computer. Course topics include: an introduction to computer hardware, keyboarding, purchasing and maintaining a computer, computer security and the Internet, online learning environments, file management, search engines, and e-mail. You will also be introduced to word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Operate basic PC hardware, including common input, output and storage devices.

  2. Achieve a keyboarding skill of 25 WPM

  3. Purchase and maintain a computer and fix common computer problems

  4. Secure a computer and connect to the Internet

  5. Use online learning systems, including Canvas

  6. Use the Windows operating system to manage folders, files, and programs.

  7. Find and use information on the World Wide Web

  8. Use basic word processing functions to prepare a document that incorporates a variety of formatting options.

  9. Communicate with others use Internet tools such as e-mail and social media

  10. Prepare a spreadsheet that incorporates basic functions and variety of formatting options.

  11. Create and view a slideshow using basic presentation software.

All course assignments and exams are closely aligned to, and assess the student's mastery of these core objectives.

Core Outcomes

  • Demonstrate a keyboarding skill of 25 wpm.

  • Identify and describe hardware components related to a personal computer with an emphasis on input, output, memory, and storage devices.

  • Explain the pros and cons of different types of computers (mobile, tablets, desktop, etc.) and show they are an informed consumer.

  • Discuss how computers are connected to the Internet, including web browsers and search engines.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with an online learning management system.

  • Explain and demonstrate good file management practices (files, folders, etc.).

  • Describe and use information on the World Wide Web.

  • Demonstrate communication with others using Internet tools such as email and social media.

  • Perform introductory tasks in Microsoft Word relating to starting a document, navigating the software, and accessing basic functionality.

  • Perform introductory tasks in Microsoft Excel relating to starting a spreadsheet, navigating the software, and accessing basic functionality.

  • Perform introductory tasks in Microsoft PowerPoint relating to starting and viewing a presentation, navigating the software, and accessing basic functionality.

Test Out Requirements

Students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in this course will need to complete a Departmental proficiency exam. Departmental proficiency examinations are created by appropriate college faculty to allow students to demonstrate their mastery of course content in designated subjects. These examinations will be equivalent to the cumulative final assessment used in the course. Faculty will determine the minimum score required to earn credit by exam for these courses.
